Ropewalks

Ropewalks is a thriving district of  Liverpool City Centre which derives its name from the craft of rope-making for sailing ships that dominated the area until the 19th century. Since then it has become a cultural hub for independent shops, restaurants, bars, nightlife and galleries. There are a number of historic warehouse buildings which owe much of their character to the rope-making industry.

More about Ropewalks

Creative and bohemian is just a couple of ways to describe the RopeWalks area. It is home to the Bluecoat arts centre and FACT multimedia studios. Its Victorian warehouses are filled with vintage shops, cafes, and chic bistros. One of the favoured streets of Liverpool, Bold Street is found in the Ropewalks and is a bustling honey pot of world food stores, quirky bazaars and international eateries!

TO DO AND SEE

TO LIVE

  • Visit FACT cinema – it is the UK’s leading organisation for the support and exhibition of art and film that embraces new technology and explores digital culture. It has two large art galleries, three cinemas, a media and events space, a lab for learning and experimentation, a café and a bar.
  • Take a tour around the Quirky Corner, try to complete the puzzles, brain teasers and oddball photo opportunities. Located on Duke Street it is fun for all the family.
  • Drop into the Bluecoat Art Centre. Bluecoat is Liverpool’s contemporary arts centre, a working home for artists, and a place where audiences can experience art in new ways. Located within Liverpool’s oldest building, it offers a dynamic programme of exhibitions and events, an award-winning programme for families and children and a bustling café serving delicious homemade meals.
  • If you are looking for a fun activity head down to PINS. Injecting Liverpool’s Ropewalks area with a fun and immersive experience, from bowling lanes to shuffleboard, they have got it. From first-rate food to the very best behind the bar.

  • Bold Street boasts shops, cafés, bars, restaurants, culture and entertainment all on one long straight road, and honestly it’s hard to resist making a pit stop or even spending a fair few hours here. So you don’t pass this road by! Here are our top picks; Maray, Leaf, Kassap & Elif.
  • Discover the finest quality steaks Liverpool has to offer at The Cowshead
  • Duke Street Food and drink market offers a range of independent food and drink stalls, there is literally something for everyone!

  • The Ropewalks area hosts some of the most popular bars in Liverpool and is certainly the City’s hot spot for nightlife!
  • The Red Lion has a traditional pub feel, serving great cask ales and lagers, pies, pork scratchings and classic spirits and cocktails as well as having dominoes sets, a dart board available and showing sports on TVs, what more could you want?!
  • Berry & Rye, a small and intimate venue with fabulous drinks and great atmosphere.
  • You are guaranteed a great time at The Motel Bar! Karaoke with a live band!!

  • Traditionally the areas long, straight streets were used to weave rope for sale to ships docked in port. With the decline of the docks, the area became a slum and by the 1990s, it was deserted and unloved.
  • Developers saw potential here and were convinced that people would valued the character of these buildings. The regeneration of Ropewalks started with developments like The Tea Factory which was home to the North West’s first loft style apartments.
  • Many other developments followed and the area now has a fantastic mix of classic conversation and modern new build options.
  • Today, Ropewalks is the vibrant heart of Liverpool’s independent cultural scene, great public transport links and  parking options, make Ropewalks an desirable place to live.
