Georgian Quarter

You will often hear it said that Liverpool has more listed buildings outside of London than any other city and several Georgian Squares that are as good as the capital. The majority of these facts rely on an area of the city called the Georgian Quarter or Canning. Located to the southeast of the city the area is full of thousands of stunning Georgian properties.

More about Georgian Quarter

If that’s not enough how about not one Cathedral but two, a booming restaurant and leisure scene and some of the city’s friendliest old “watering holes”. Theatre goers will revel in having  The Everyman theatre on their doorstep. It is no surprise that The Georgian Quarter has become a popular film set for producers across the UK with TV/Film series Peaky Blinders, Foyles War and The English Game all having been filmed here.

TO DO AND SEE
TO EAT
TO DRINK
TO LIVE

  • Meander around the area on foot and you will be amazed at the diversity, quality and sheer number of architectural masterpieces.
  • Some of the area’s squares such as Falkner Square and Abercromby Square make you feel that you could be in central London rather than Liverpool.
  • Visit or just marvel at the city’s two cathedrals. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (known locally as Paddy’s Wigwam) and the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral the largest in Britain and 5th largest in Europe.
  • Take a trip to the top of the Anglican for some of the best views across the city
    .

  • The area around Hope Street is the heart of the dining focus in the Georgian Quarter and home to some of the best dining venues in the city.
  • The Quarter on the corner of Falkner Street and Hope Street is one of the coolest and most popular eateries offering all day dining and outdoor seating with views across to LIPA and Hope Street.
  • The London Carriage Works located in the boutique and popular Hope Street Hotel continues to serve quality British food to residents and visitors.
  • Although we have already mentioned The Art School in the Liverpool City Centre guide its proximity to the Georgian Quarter is another string in the bow of quality dining in this part of the city.
  • Two other notable restaurants include The Barnacle from the team behind The Art School who have opened a new restaurant on the site of the old Florist and at the other end of the scale is Free State Kitchen a down to earth low key diner serving burgers, wings and fries and popular with the city’s students.

  • During the 80’s and 90’s the Georgian Quarter was the forgotten area of the city with many of the area’s properties derelict and empty. Crime was rife and the majority of the properties were owned by housing associations and low-level landlords.
  • As the city recovered slowly but surely the area started to blossom and then bloom.
  • Fast forward 30/40 years and the area is now one of the most popular places to live in the city where apartments average £170,000 and 4 and 5 bed townhouses regularly sell for up to £1million.
  • Depending on your budget and requirements there is a development to suit all buyers and tenants and too many to list here.
