New plans for Fabric District

A new public consultation has begun looking at the transport provision in one of Liverpool’s up and coming areas, The Fabric District. Situated in an area to the east of the city The Fabric District was the area populated by Liverpool’s rag trade (hence the name) but has since become a hub for independent businesses, new homes and cultural spaces.

The new consultation that began on June 9th and will end on July 6th is looking at ways that they can link the area better with the city centre. Although the area had suffered a major decline over the last 20/30 years recent new developments, public realm improvements and investment has transformed the outlook but there is still a huge amount to do. The consultation will focus on buses, cycling and walking to and through the area.

The plans proposed include footpath improvements and adjoining road crossings, new specific and segregated cycle lanes and new bus lanes/junctions all of which should enhance connectivity and access to/through this up and coming area of the city. There would also be an improved public plaza being created at Monument Place, with new seating areas, an outdoor events space and an open bandstand.
From a residential and living perspective there has already been a substantial amount of new build development in the area although the majority of these have been focused on the student sector given its close proximity to both John Moores and University of Liverpool.

It is hoped that residential developments will now start to appear as the improvements proposed under this consultation come to fruition. We have already seen on new BTR development completed recently, Milliners Yard, which is a 258 scheme that opened in 2024. The area is popular with both tenants and owner occupiers given its better affordability in comparison to some of the more prime areas of Liverpool.
