City Council acquires Chinatown site

After years of disappointment, false promises and failing companies Liverpool City Council has stepped in and purchased the prominent Great George Street site formerly known as New Chinatown. Describing it as a “hugely important step” the council has acquired the 4.5 acre site which has seen a series of proposed schemes fail to come to fruition and most recently a series of complicated legal challenges from other bidders and interested parties.The site has been purchased from the administrator Cowgills after the previous development company Great George Street Project Ltd collapsed into administration

The site was bought with support from the Ministry of Housing and the Liverpool City Region CA and offers the council a unique opportunity to work up detailed proposal for the scheme and hopefully engage a developer who can take the site forward. The site’s proximity to Baltic, the proposed new Baltic Station and Liverpool’s existing Chinatown reinforces the importance of this gateway site to the city. Hopefully we will see a broad range of housing proposals including some apartments bieng sold solely for owner occupation rather than for investment.
